Understanding Addiction

The rapid growth of the Internet in recent years has seen the rise of new addiction problems, including Facebook addiction, online pornography addiction, online gambling addiction, and even Internet addiction.

Although the word “addiction” is used to mean many different things, what we’re talking about here is more accurately described as “pathological dependence” – a flaw in the brain chemistry that creates an overwhelming and escalating urge to engage in a certain kind of behavior, even if the person knows that their actions are hurting them and they’re desperate to stop.

The condition of addiction can be easier to understand when compared to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). An OCD sufferer may be aware that, logically, there is no need to repeatedly wash their hands until they’re raw and bleeding, but the compulsion is so strong that they’re powerless to stop.

Similarly, an online gambling addict may be racked with guilt because, once again, they’ve spent the grocery money on online poker, but no matter what they try, they cannot gain control of their behavior.

Worse still, when an addict’s compulsive behavior is of a type that is considered socially unacceptable, it’s common to hide the problem and try to tackle it privately. This usually only results in the problem becoming more deeply entrenched.

 Treatment is Available

The first step to successfully tacking addiction is education. The addict may have come to the conclusion that they are a wicked person who is beyond redemption, but learning that their troubling actions are symptoms of an illness that afflicts millions of other people, many of whom have been successfully treated, can rekindle their hope and create a burning desire to obtain treatment.

Talking to a doctor can help; they may be able to recommend a local addiction treatment program. Alternatively, private treatment can be obtained (see below).

The most important thing is for the addict to recognize that they have a dependency problem and that they cannot enter recovery without professional help.

How You Can Help

At the beginning of this article, we said that there is a strong chance that a friend of family member is suffering, maybe in silence, but that there is a way you can help.

There’s little point in trying to guess who may or not be affected. Addiction afflicts all different kinds of people, and often the person you least expect.

What you can do is help to put this article in front of as many different people as possible. The more people that see this message, the more likely it is that it will reach someone who really needs it.

Now don’t get me wrong, selling is selling, We all know that. The message has to deliver value, it has to be compelling and it needs to call on the prospect to take action. That’s all fine and dandy. But, The thing is.. the message can be delivered in several ways right…

1. - A long form sales letter with a call to action at the bottom of a page that scrolls all the way down.
2. - A sales video with a timed order button that pops up at a specific part of the video.
3. - A hybrid with a video on top and then a moderate sales message and product description beneath it.
4. - And naturally… a webinar. (can’t forget those)

So let me ask you this… in your opinion, with the advent of #2, 3 & 4 do you feel that #1 is dead?

I mean really? Have long form sales letters seen their day?

Personally, I think that “WE are not our customers.” Everyone is unique and has their own preferences for the way they absorb information.

While the great majority of people are going to respond well to videos over reading a bunch of text, there are still some people that would like to read the words or maybe even print the page to read it later.

Due to iPads, tablets and smart phones.. I know that not many people print things on paper anymore cause they can just read them on the go now a days. I think that video engages the prospect more because it can trigger several parts of the brain simultaneously. A video can follow a story line with pictures thereby connecting words with images and sound. This combination draws the viewer closer than just a written letter.

One of the biggest shortcomings of the long form sales letter has always been the ability for the prospect to scroll. Many studies have been done on this, and in most cases the user begins scrolling down almost immediately after landing on a website. It’s almost like they want to just go see how big the page is before they actually dive in. The challenge here is that this action typically ruins the “big reveal”. It shows the viewer the price long before having a chance to explain the value. Now the visitor has pre-judged the product on price alone and IF they still read the page the sales process has become about justification instead of impulse.

You see there is a big difference between retail selling and conventional selling. In retail, the products are each laid out with price tags on them and the viewer is “shopping”. They are here to make a choice on a product, they have already decided to make a purchase long before they went shopping. But in conventional selling…  the prospect sometimes doesn’t even know they need the product, they must be educated first. That’s where real “selling” comes in. And in REAL selling you simply can’t lead with the price if you want to be successful. The prospect can not control the pace of the presentation in real selling. Just like you can’t go to college and skip to the end of the lecture, if you want to pass the test you have to take the class at the professor’s pace. One bit of information is introduced after the other to comprise the complete lesson.

Sales videos allow us to control the pace. We can establish the need and then educate the prospect feature by feature, benefit by benefit thereby building VALUE before the big reveal. This brings up another important point…  “The Transport Bar” You know, the little controls at the bottom of the video that allow you to pause, rewind and FAST FORWARD. So, knowing what you know now…  do you think that a SALES video would be as effective if it allowed the viewer to Fast Forward to the end and see the price?  Of course not. That’s why the EFFECTIVE sales videos of today do not have a transport bar on them.  Does this upset you? Well.. if it does then the chances are that you were not going to buy the product anyway. You are probably watching the video through the impatient eyes of a marketer or competitor not the needy eyes of a prospect. WE are not our customers.

That being said…  a video should always be “pauseable”, that’s just common sense. In case we have to step away from the computer we should be able to click the screen, pause the video and return later. But, from a marketing perspective, allowing the prospect to control the pace of a sales message is a big NO NO. The salesman sets the tone, the salesman presents the pitch, the salesman closes the deal when the prospect has been primed and ready to commit.

The question I pose before you is this…

“Can a long form sales letter still deliver business value in today’s day and age?”

A long day of work at the J.O.B. has come to an end and he grabs a quick bite to eat then sits at the helm once more on his quest to make some online coin. As he opens his flash drive directory to access his current website project the wicked horseman toils with his sense of better judgment..

“To check thy Gmail or Not to check thy Gmail that is the question…  Whether it is nobler of the mind to suffer the slings and arrows that newbie flesh is heir to …by reading emails and being voluntarily sucked into a never ending cavern of email jokes, threads and next big thing promotions… ”

-OR-

“To stand fast and resist the temptation to keep “informed” by diving into his own project and charge forward….”

What to do, what to do? That is the question.

There is no component of your online business more important than your email client and there is no component as equally destructive either.

Think about it… what is typically the first thing we do when we sit at our computers? We check our emails. Consider the powerful emotional clench your email has on you, it can literally set the tone for your entire day.

For example, Day#1
You sit down to work and right away you see that you’ve gotten 4 payment notifications amounting to a couple hunded dollars… You’re excited, you’re motivated, you’re ready to conquer the world.

Adversely, Day#2
You sit down to work and right away you see that you’ve gotten 4 refund notifications or 11 support tickets… ughhh. What kind of day are you having now???

The worst is day #3
You sit down to work and right away you see that you’ve gotten 16 emails from various marketers promoting a huge product launch… You examine them all for the best bonus offer and get sucked into a 2 hour purchase decision that ends up costing you $197. Whats even more destructive is that now you download the product and spend yet another 2 hours tinkering about in yet another direction taking you further and further away from completing that project on your flash drive. Remember that?

The rider on the pale white horse is names EMAIL and he carries the plagues of marketer death,

SOS – Shiny object syndrome – the browbeaten compulsion to purchase the latest and greatest fad. Over and Over and Over again..

CIO - Critical Information overload – the overindulgence in new tactics that only leads to 37 layered windows wallpapering every centimeter of screen space on your monitor burying your project deep underneath. Have you ever started closing windows as you prepare to log off for the night and suddenly rediscovered the project you stated working on 3 hours ago?

PA – Paralysis Analysis – the overwhelmed state of mind precluding you from taking action due to conflicting information or your own literal translation of various marketers differing view points and marketing angles.

TH - Technical Hogwash – the benign gelatinous substance created from liquified neurons after prolonged exposure to lines and lines of html code, marketing blueprints sales letters and generally useless technical jargon.

The pale horse rider carries the plagues that not only spell out but also turn you into a………

SOS-CIO-PA-TH! (get it?)

Avoid the pale horse vice grip by Limiting your email exposure.
Schedule & allocate a set for email check it once a day and thats it.
Avoid opening chain letters and joke mail. If its that important just archive it and check it on weekends.
Install a support desk with an FAQ – direct all customer inquiries there instead.
Create priority labels for important people that will put the emails at the top of your inbox.
Create a “vacation response” that deters senseless emails and directs customers to you support desk.

You should view your email client as a tool and not a distraction. Turn that hinderance toting horseman into your very own pony express. Make him your allie, Domesticate him, Rule him, Control him! Use him to carry your message along on the rest of his stops rather than just leaving everyone else’s at yours.

I remember 4 years ago when I tried to submit one of my first products to Clickbank I got rejected. That product was and still is one of my best sellers and it has gone on to make me well into 6 figures and grown me a huge list.  Its a very informative ebook about how to create long form sales letters. Naturally its quite a bit out of date at this point since most of what we do is video but the free mini-course and tutorials still get me raving reviews to this day.

Would you believe that Clickbank refused to allow it in their marketplace because of the word “ASS”… they rejected me (the nerve) and when I called them they said that they could never list a product called KickAssSalesPages.com!  I was furious, I went 2 years without using the Clickbank marketplace because I was so taken back that they would do that to me.

Today, I see Clickbank approving pages that use foul language in the sales videos, they allow images of Cocaine lines and drug paraphernalia, they approve of blatant lies and ridiculous refund rates. They even tolerate vendor scams like downgrading refund requests and gravity manipulation among many others.

The sad part is that they are a leader in our industry yet rather than setting a high standard they just continue to lower the bar with each passing launch. These Autotraffic Scams have gotten totally out of control. Many of these product creators boast in public about their deceptive sales pages and literally laugh all the way to the bank as Clickbank provides the platform for them to scam millions upon millions of dollars from unwitting entrepreneurs.

How long can it last?  How much is enough?  Well, rest assured that the Government will eventually step in…  knowing the US government they’ll probably try to take control of Clickbank like they are with healthcare so they can further perpetuate the problem and make use of the money. (Don’t get me started)

In reality, it wasn’t long ago that the FTC stepped in and put some pretty stern policies in place for merchant accounts. The credit card companies bitched enough and they had their way with forced continuity, negative options and one click upsells. How long before the FTC steps in and forces Clickbank to take a good hard look at what they are empowering these crooks to do?

The sad part is that I like Clickbank, its a GREAT friggen service, and fills a big need for internet marketers. Unfortunately when the hammer comes down even the good guys will suffer because of the actions of a select group of scum bags. And let me make this clear…  it’s THEIR fault, the scum bag marketers that produce unethical and immoral products that lie on their sales pages and fail to deliver. Sure Clickbank plays its role in empowering them and can step in if they want to, but the blame falls first on these unethical marketers NOT Clickbank.

These guys are even lying to each other now… the JV recruitment pages promise bonus prizes that they never deliver, and they often just arbitrarily list the names of other marketers that are “Onboard” when in reality they don’t even know them…   I have been invited to a JV page many a time only to find upon arrival that I am already listed as “Onboard”!!  Wow.

So where do we go from here? How do we protect ourselves from the scum bags? Well for one we stick together. We isolate the scum bags by NOT promoting for them. This means that as marketers we will take responsibility for the actions we take and the products we endorse. YES it means that you’ll actually REVIEW the product and demand to see the sales video BEFORE you agree to promote something or let them list you as “Onboard”.

It also means that we will be much more vigilant when buying products from other marketers, we should actually seek out reviews FIRST. We should investigate the marketers first and we should protect one another as a prudent colleague should.

Ultimately, we will start to fix our industry by individually adopting prudent practices in our own businesses. Set the bar high. Put your customers first. Create a list of business practices that are important to you, post it on your site and hold yourself to the task. In conclusion, I think we should ask “What can I do to make things better.”  If everyone of us did that, then the scum bags wouldn’t have a chance. What’s your opinion? I’d like to know.

I recently had a fellow marketer (who shall remain nameless so don’t ask)  approach me about his success or rather his LACK of success when promoting products to his followers and subscribers.

I looked into his recent emails because I have been one of his subscribers for quite some time and they were all stored in my gmail account.

The answer was clear… the guy is simply afraid to sell.

Here’s the thing with sales, THEE most important thing to convey when selling
is confidence in the product you are selling. You simply can not pussy foot
around the notion that there is a product being presented and that it requires a purchase.

Look, here’s the reality, whether you’re selling on a website, in a video, or on an email, the point is to persuade the prospect to make an informed decision that benefits both you and them.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when promoting an affiliate product or selling on your own site:

1. Know what you’re talking about, if you’re not familiar with the product then you have no business selling it.
2. Speak with concise certainty. Failing to do this will only raise doubts in the prospects mind and inhibit their likelihood of following through.
3. Give them one option and one option only, that is to purchase NOW. Don’t provide alternatives or weak closes that leave them with the opportunity to consider not to making the purchase.

Does that sound too aggressive to you? Well then you’re probably one of the people that isn’t making as many sales as they can be. You’re simply afraid to sell. So, what you need to do is research that fear instead of trying to come up with an excuse as to why your marketing efforts are not working. It’s not the product, it’s not the prospect, it’s not the economy, it’s you.

Selling is not bad, it’s not evil, it’s what makes the planet go around. Perhaps, if you feel as if selling is bad or aggressive, it’s because you yourself at one time or another has had a bad experience with an overbearing salesman. You didn’t like the way it made you feel and you don’t want to make others feel that way and that’s understandable. However, selling is good for all the parties involved. When you are ethically representing a good product that you know you’re prospect needs and you’re offering it at a fair price. You are doing your customer a disservice by letting them convince you of why they shouldn’t buy. You are failing them, you are failing yourself, you are failing the family that you support and you are failing the worlds economy by blaming things other than yourself for the lack of sales.

To become a high preforming closer you must be so absolutely confident that your product will help the prospect by either solving one of their problems or otherwise improving their life, that you will do everything in your power to guide them through the purchase decision.

The fellow marketer that I was talking about earlier was making multiple mistakes in his sales tactics, learn from them, here they are:

1. He had never personally purchased or used the product he was representing. Therefore, he lacked confidence.
2. He was promoting multiple products at the same time, over complicating the purchase decision of the prospect.
3. He was using all kinds of disclaimers to soften the blow of the reality that an exchange of money is required to complete this interaction. He was saying things like, “as always, be sure to look into everything yourself before you buy a product, I can’t personally endorse this, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.” Now come on, if you’re going to sell me something then stop yapping and sell me something already. As my good friend Marshall Sylver says, “selling is good, it helps you because you get something you need. It helps me, cause I’m making a living and it helps the economy because money is exchanging hands.” If you don’t firmly believe that then you will never discover your true potential and you will never be completely successful at sales of any kind. My sincere effort here is to educate and not to brag or boast. If you’re looking to poke the iron prod at things I say then just click away now because more than likely the years of negative financial programming your brain has endured will simply preclude my message from getting through. First of all, know this…  I don’t think money is the most important thing in life, but I put it up there with OXYGEN. Why am I telling you this? Well, in hopes to open your eyes to the “scarcity mentality” you’ve been brainwashed to believe your whole life.

On a daily basis I get “Whiner Emails” – You know the ones right? -  It’s basically an email from someone that says they want to make a change in their life and emulate what I’ve done in mine. Then they proceed to ramble on about all the things that are precluding them and hindering them from success. They spend all this time to compose an email to me, telling me about their family problems, medical ailments, emotional challenges – Poor Me, Woe Is Me – “If you only knew what it’s like Omar, You are sooo lucky…”   STOP!

Look at yourself. NO – I mean really look at yourself. Are you earning at least 10k per month on  autopilot yet? Why not? List the reasons. Now – are you ready…  CHANGE THOSE THINGS IN YOUR LIFE! It’s such a simple concept that most of the people that have read this very post – already dismissed the content by the time they got to this sentence because the negative financial programing of their brain simply would not let them consider the notion.

It’s always easier to point the finger and say “Well he’s just lucky.” than it is to actually humble oneself, admit failure and model that successful “lucky” person. If you want what a man has, then just do what a man does. People tell me they want to have my success, but they want it NOW. They want it without the hard work. They want it with little or no effort. They basically want to keep doing the same thing that they’ve been doing (or less) yet all of a sudden make a bunch more money. Huhh??? Did you know that the definition of insanity is the act of repeating the same action each time expecting a different result?

Wanting and Deciding are two completely frames of mind. I wanted to quit my job loooong before I actually decided to. I wanted to have a multiple six figure income loooooong before I decided to create one. How did I create it you ask? Well, the method I chose was sales and later, more specifically internet marketing. But the method was not as important as the mind set.  Pay close attention here…

Regardless of the method you chose to become abundantly wealthy you will fail miserably if you do not discipline yourself to only partake in positive actions that support that decision.

I have students that will swear up and down to me about how committed they are to their mission of online success, yet they repeatedly send me mafia wars requests, or farmville requests on facebook. Now – how does playing video games help you acheive financial freedom? Better yet how many millionaires are on your mafia wars team or play farmville with you? NONE? Hmmmm… I wonder why that is?  Actually, I know the answer and that answer is: Because we see computers as a tool and not a toy. It is because we value our time and we understand that our success and the success of those that learn from us depends on the productive use of our time. We understand that the actions we take today give rise to the finances of tomorrow.

Here are the top 10 reasons why I feel most people suck at making money.

#10 They are afraid to buy and therefor concurrently afraid to sell.

#9 They spend way to much time hypnotized by television and the negativity it ensues.

#8 They surrond themselves with broke people instead of successful people.

#7 They play video games in their spare time instead of focusing on their financial prosperity.

#6 They succomb to the negativity of biased liberal media and they let it consume them.

#5 They refuse to embrace their FEARS.

#4 They believe in luck instead of themselves.

#3 They lack organization of home space, work space and MIND SPACE.

#2 They “Question” instead of asking questions.

#1 They simply have not DECIDED that they WILL be successful and wealthy.

It always intrigues me when someone says the phrase “When  I BECOME a millionaire…”  I always give them this dumbfounded expression and ask “Do you mean like when a caterpillar BECOMES a butterfly?”  You see there’s that negative financial brainwash talking again. People don’t simply BECOME millionaires. Millionaire status is something we have to ACHIEVE. So by telling yourself that you will one day BECOME wealthy you are just propagating the false notion that one day you’ll wake up rich. Wake up kiddo, there is no Santa.

Instead, program your mind to BELIEVE in yourself by speaking that which isn’t as if it were and then your physical being will cause the decision to manifest itself. Does it sound like a bunch of hog wash to you? Well – then there’s that brainwashing taking over again. Just let the wall down and embrace the concept that that this sort of thinking, though different, peculiar and perhaps even “silly” could very well be the change you need to make you better at making money.

You may not know this but I am a HUGE Mixed Martial Arts fan (MMA). The foremost leauge of MMA is the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). I love watching the Ultimate Fighter reality show as well as keeping up with the stats and I order all the pay per view matches as well.

My friend Devin got me hooked on MMA and UFC about 6 years ago and I’ve been a silent fan ever since. Devin and I love talking about the fighters and we place our own friendly wagers on the fights just for fun. Last year when I was launching my Sales Page creation product I had to come up with a cool theme and I figured.. “Why not call it Kick Ass Sales Pages?”

I had my boy Steve over at Planet-Divinity Graphics hook up some cool fighter images for the website and my other buddy J.I. Starr helped me create a fun sales video. Well, to open the video I used a small clip of a UFC fight from the Ultimate Fighter reality show. I launched the product and it did really well. To this day I still get tons of compliments on the video.

Here’s the part where I nearly soiled my pants… On new years eve 2008 going into 2009 I was at a party with my family and my cell phone rings from a New York number. I figured it was just a friend from New York calling to wish Melinda and I a happy new year. Well it was… It was actually my good friend and colleauge Frank Pugliese who is Mike Filsaime’s General Manager at the New York office.

Frank said “Omar- I am standing next to someone that wants to have a word with you.” My reply was “Sure Frank put him on… ” next thing I hear is “Hey you little twerp, where do you get off putting a video of me on your website, what if I fly down to Florida and kick YOUR ass? Huh? Huh?”

Feeling a little tipsy after a few rum and cokes naturally, my response was “Hell yeah homie- Bring it! I’m right here kid!” … then I asked “By the way.. who is this?” Low and behold, I was actually speaking with Matt Serra the former UFC welter weight champion of the world! Talk about a humbling experience!

Fortunately for me Matt is a great guy and has a good sense of humor! He went on to tell me how much he enjoyed my video and how he liked my website. Then Frank even took a picture of Matt looking at my website on his laptop. (See Picture Above) – Anyway – I got to speak with Matt Serra for a few minutes about the UFC and his upcoming bout (at the time) with George St. Pierre who he lovingly calls “Pepe Le Pew” LOL.

As it turns out Frank Pugliese, Matt Serra and Mike Filsaime have all been friends for many years. Frank happened to be at Matt’s house for New Years eve and he decided to play a practical joke on me!

Talking with Matt was a great experience for me and he even invited me to come hang out with him at his gym in Long Island NY. What a great guy. It’s a small world. Thanks Frank and Matt for being so cool!
